The Board that manages the licensure process

Just remember that you receive your final approval from the Montana Board of Private Security Officers and Investigators. The latter is managed by the MT Department of Labor and Industry.

Minimum Requirements

As in many other provinces, you need to be a legal citizen or temporary resident of the United States. Each applicant must be at least 21 years old.

If you have chosen this responsible path, you should be prepared to present your criminal past and background. This is a must as the Department checks if you have been convicted of alcohol or drug abuse. If so, you will definitely not get permission to practice.

In addition, it is very important that you have served in the army. Or, at least you should not have been discharged from the army illegally, as this is also a serious problem. Remember that they do not check your financial status.

You do not have to take a mental health test, as well. However, you must submit three character references from different people who are not connected to you by blood.

Work and Experience

These are the most essential points of education, and each applicant must have at least one of them:

• a high school diploma
• three years (about 5,400 hours) of education or work experience
• at least a year and a half of experience as a P.I.

Pass the Exam

After meeting all the necessary requirements and completing these steps, the Board requires you to pass a written exam. You should learn and write all the details about MT laws related to private investigations. The passing grade of an exam is 70%.

Complete the Training

There is a special offer from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy for completing six months of the work requirement. You may pass special training and acquire the necessary knowledge about the law of the state. You can also choose to train in related disciplines like:

Applying for the Montana Private Investigator License

• a photograph (passport-style)

• three character references written by the people who are not related to you by blood or marriage

• examination – $20
• fingerprinting – $27,50
• firearm endorsement – $50 (if any)
• proof of insurance – at least $500,000

Renewal: You will be surely notified 60 days ago when your permit expires. So, be attentive and try not to delay paying the renewal fee once you receive the notification.
